Urgup is beeing "home" for people in many centuries. Like other Cappadocia towns, Urgup's name also has changed number of times. Some of them are; Tomissos,
Osiana (Assiana), Prokopios (Prokopia), Bashisar, Burgut and finally turned into Urgup.
Urgup was the capital of the Seljukian Empire for this region. But earlier than this during the late Christianity it used as Bishop Central. As you can see, it is a quite important place for years.
When you look at the map that I drew (frankly which is not really good), you can see that Seljuks were quite smart the control the region with three different major towns. Uchisar and Ortahisar are mostly used for observing, Bashisar which is recently known as Urgup was the control mechanism.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Uchisar, Ortahisar ve Bashisar (recently named Urgup), castles in the towns used as observation towers during the Seljukian Period.
